THE Carlton Football Club is delighted to announce defender Nic Newman has penned a new two-year deal.
Signing on to remain at the Club until at least the end of 2023, the 28-year-old will embark on his fourth season at Carlton, tracking towards 50 games in Blue.
After injury impeded his 2020 season, the attacking defender was back in action this year making 14 senior appearances, finishing third at the Club for average rebound 50s.
Since he arrived at IKON Park at the end of 2018, Newman has earned a reputation for his unrelenting efforts on the field and his passion and drive off of it, receiving acclaim as the recipient of Carlton’s Best Clubman award following the 2020 season.
Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said the Club was delighted to sign Newman for the next two seasons.
“It was great to see Nic get back out on the park this year and make a strong contribution in defence,” Austin said.
“Nic’s injury last season allowed him to take on an off-field role and explore his passion for coaching. That really enabled him to grow in a leadership sense, and he used that to his and the team’s advantage both across the VFL and AFL this year.
“With a solid pre-season, we are excited to see Nic gain consistency next year and we are looking forward to watching him get back to his best and assert his confidence and control in our back six.”
