EDDIE Betts and Goal of the Year nominations: it’s an iconic combination.
So no-one will be surprised that the champion small forward has once again featured among the three best goals of the week for Round 8, especially considering the quality of finish.
Betts had Marvel Stadium in raptures just nine minutes into yesterday’s Round 8 contest, with what proved to be his first of five goals for the afternoon.
As Carlton entered inside 50, the ball came off hands and Betts - simply - did what Betts does.
It’s been his forte ever since arriving in the AFL 16 years ago: Betts was in the right place at the right time, but what came next was even a surprise for those who have watched Betts so closely for so many years.
Identifying that he wouldn’t have had enough time to take control of the footy, Betts tapped the ball to himself before volleying the Sherrin out of midair from 20 metres out through the big sticks.
It went down as Betts’ 619th goal of his career, and kickstarted a performance which saw him kick five or more goals for the 11th time in Navy Blue (and the first time since 2012).
