It’s a milestone that is well deserved and in this case long awaited.

When David Ellard runs out for his 50th AFL game tonight he will have well and truly earned the recognition he will receive.

The 25-year-old has been on Carlton’s list since 2008, having been selected at pick 34 in that year’s rookie draft.

But sadly for Ellard his football career has been plagued with injury. He did string together a full year in 2011, which also happened to be Carlton’s most successful season in recent memory, with the side reaching a semi-final showdown against the West Coast Eagles.

Speaking with carltonfc.com.au, Ellard said his lengthy journey to 50 games will make the milestone all the sweeter.

“Obviously it’s taken eight years to finally get here and there were definitely times when I wondered if my career was over,” Ellard said.

“I remember sitting down with the Club here a few years ago and them not being able to confirm my future, so just to stay around and achieve that 50 is something I am really proud of.”

Ellard’s journey from the rookie list into the senior side wasn’t an easy one.

He only played a single game in his inaugural year of 2008, and was destined to earn his keep within the VFL.

The Northern Bullants were premiers in 2009 and Ellard was the Ants’ Best and Fairest, as well as Carlton’s Best Clubman, despite not playing a senior game all year.

It was a testament to Ellard’s work ethic and affability, and it wasn’t long before he would get another opportunity at AFL level.

In 2010, he played seven senior games and in 2011 he became a staple for selection.

He was a midfielder coming into the AFL and a midfielder during his early years at the Blues; however, in 2014, Ellard’s role has changed.

Complementing the likes of Troy Menzel, Levi Casboult and Lachie Henderson in attack, he has moulded himself into a harassing small forward.

Having developed a goal sense not too dissimilar to Menzel, Ellard has also provided the trademark ferocity and desire for the football, which he has been known for throughout his career.

The boy from Perth sits alongside Ed Curnow, Andrew Carrazzo and captain Marc Murphy as the leading tacklers at Carlton this year, while he also sits in the top five for goals per game.
