Carlton midfielder Matthew Cottrell will continue to live out his dream in the Navy Blue after signing a one-year deal to remain on the Club’s rookie list until at least the end of 2021.

After arriving at Ikon Park through the 2019 pre-season supplemental selection period, the boyhood Bluebagger was given his first senior opportunity in Round 11 this year.

His debut saw Cottrell follow in the footsteps of his grandfather Len, who played 12 games for the Club from 1958–59.

The 20-year-old made five senior appearances during the second half of this season and became a cult hero for the Blues in Round 16 taking a crucial mark and slotting the match-winning goal in a memorable come-from-behind win over the Swans.

Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said the Club looked forward to seeing Cottrell take his development to the next level in 2021.

“Since arriving at Ikon Park, Matt has worked tirelessly to make the most of his opportunity and we have been really pleased with his growth this season,” Austin said.

“He is an energetic character and brings great enthusiasm to the playing group, as well as a high work rate and eagerness to improve on a daily basis.

“With five senior games now under his belt, we are looking forward to his continued development over the course of the next 12 months and seeing him push for more opportunity at senior level.”
