Sunday’s match against Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval looms as a massive encounter for the Bullants, in the wake of what was a meek second half-showing against a rampant Williamstown at the weekend.

The Ants trailed by just 20 points at half-time, but managed just four more goals for the match as the Seagulls banged on a further 13.10.

Bullants ruckman Sam Jacobs, amongst his team’s best players afield at the weekend, acknowledged that in Williamstown the team was confronted with a superior outfit.

“They’re top of the ladder. They’re  a very good offensive team. We knew that, and while we came back well in the second quarter we turned the ball over a lot more in the second half and they smashed us,” Jacobs said.

“Basically we didn’t pressure them enough and once they got up and about in the second half and smashed us.”

Jacobs, who took on Will Minson at the ruck contests, acknowledged that the Seagulls were at full strength for the fixture “whereas we have a lot of improvement”.

“And we showed in the second quarter that our best can match it with them,” he said.

Of his own showing, Jacobs said he was working to basic instruction. As he said: “Nothing really changes. I just have to keep making sure my intensity and work rate is up”.

Jacobs aside, Mitch Robinson, Mark Austin and Brad Fisher (with limited opportunity) were amongst the Ants’ better performers.

Sandringham away presents a serious challenge for the sixth-placed Ants in its bid to shore up its position in the upper echelon of the table.
