SHAUN Grigg might be the person Carlton has been missing in the midfield as he proved he could win the ball and use it on Saturday night while giving strong support to captain Chris Judd.

Grigg could well have played the best of his 38-game AFL career as the 22-year-old collected 20 first-half possessions when Carlton was struggling, and finished with 29 including eight contested, six clearances, six entries inside-50 and five rebounds from defensive 50.

"I personally like to help Juddy. He gets a lot of attention and I try to free him up with a block or by giving him the pill. I know if I do that it will go a long way to us winning," Grigg said.

"It was good to get my hands on the pill and obviously Juddy was awesome. It was good to get the ball in the hands early to get some confidence up and I went on from there."

Grigg was playing just his third game of the season and made the most of the chance with Chris Johnson good with 20 possessions in his fourth game of 2010 and David Ellard was solid in his first.

"For guys who aren’t certain selections each week, it's good to have a win and to get your hands on the ball and do your job in that win," Grigg said.

"That's all you can look at each week and you never take any game for granted. Once you're in you want to stay in. It's about getting that chance and when you do it's up to you to take the chance."

Grigg was proud of the team's performance to fight back from a 26-point half-time deficit to win by the same margin.

With the Blues now a game and percentage clear in eighth spot Grigg is confident they will play finals.

"We know that we are a fit team and if we continued to work hard that the tide would turn and it proved that," he said. "We didn’t do anything special in the second half, there was no magic wand waved at half time, it was just pure hard work. The game turned and we capitalised.

"It's just good for us to be back on the winner's list and to do it for Andy Walker's 100th game was super.

"We are a proud club with an awesome history and we expect to play finals footy. We are in the eight at the minute and we'll stay there."

The challenge for Carlton gets no easier with the run home for the season beginning with a blockbuster against Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday, but Grigg is looking forward to it.

"Obviously we've got a big game next week. They are in great form, super form and we will go and have a crack at them to see what happens," he said.

"We always get massive crowds against the Pies and we'll go out there full steam ahead to give it a crack."
