Few visiting teams can attest to taking the four points at Skilled Stadium these days, but the Northern Bullants have done just that in posting a narrow five-point victory over Geelong at “The Cattery”.

The Bullants found a way to eradicate a three quarter-time deficit of 23 points to inflict the second consecutive single-figure defeat upon the home team.

On the end of its ill-fated Foxtel Cup foray into the Gold Coast, the Bullants appeared sluggish as Geelong applied the flood.  The game eventually opened up, with Geelong posting six goals to the Bullants’ five in the second term to ensure scores were level at the main break.

An upset appeared on the cards when the Geelong players opened up a match-high 29 point lead. But the Bullants, not to be denied, booted seven of the next eight majors - including the first five goals of a frenetic final quarter - to prevail by game’s end.

“It's another four points, it’s another qualifying game that you win that gets you closer to playing finals footy and I think from a development point of view today, to watch some of the efforts of the players was fantastic,” Bullants Coach Darren Harris was quoted as saying afterwards.

“They [Geelong] were able to win those 50-50 contests from the get out kick forward and they got a good contest and brought the ball across half forward. We got caught out, but to our credit we kept doing what we wanted to do and keep pressing up, and we eventually got there.”

Prominent in the Bullants’ hard-earned win was Brock McLean, a prolific ballgetter and hard-nosed contributor around the ground.

Now third on the table, the Ants this Saturday host the sixth-placed North Ballarat at Visy Park.
