Tangled – Play the Blues
In this week's edition of "Tangled Up In Blues", Ben Birchall looks at Carlton's musical connection.
So I really love it when music and the Blues meet in the middle. That was the case the other day when tough in and under bloke Aaron Joseph popped up in my twitter feed. He had linked to a video of himself playing the solo from iconic metal act Metallica’s Enter Sandman. And making a pretty good fist of it too.
Chatting to Jamo on the Carlton Podcast on Monday, he alerted me to the fact that Aaron isn’t alone in his love of cranking out the riffs. He was part of a ‘band’ with fellow midfielder Mitch Robinson called PVB or ‘Pascoe Vale Boys’. This may or may not have been due to the fact that they lived in Pascoe Vale. Have a listen and see if it matches your expectations. Aggressive music? Hitting things? That doesn’t sound like the Mitch Robinson we know.
Andrew Walker dabbles in music too. His brother Benny Walker is a talented singer songwriter, and you might have caught Andrew jamming with him on The Footy Show. Is there anything that lad can’t do? It hardly seems fair to those of us who aren’t carved out of rock and can’t fly.
Walks is also in the growing list of Blues who love country music, along with Chris Yarran and Jeff Garlett. Yarran is a fan of Alan Jackson, while Walks paid a visit to Blues supporter Lee Kernaghan over the off-season. They even organised a jumper for US country superstar Dierks Bentley.
Maybe the country music bug came via the boys from the west, or up on the Murray.
So between country, metal and Shaun Hampson and Jamo’s love of Jersey Boys, the arguments over the weight room stereo must be something.
Either way, I know what song we all want to be singing tonight. Particularly as it’s Pascoe Vale Boys Mitch Robinson’s 50th, and he’s re-signed for another 2 years.
Rock on.
