Carlton’s Olympic connection
Young cyclist Amy Cure will be looking to paint the Olympic games BLUE and gold when she takes on the world in London.
Not that there was any question as to whether Amy would be in the Australian Olympic team; it was simply a matter of waiting for the cycling team to be officially announced.
Prior to the official announcement Amy was in Melbourne for a few days and as any true Carlton supporter would, she took the opportunity to visit Visy Park. Staying across the road from Carlton’s home base ensured she was able to make the time to not just visit to see the facilities but catch up with some of the Carlton players.
A former Tasmania now living in Adelaide, Amy was thrilled to catch up with Bryce Gibbs as he was finishing his training session for the day, along with another of her favourite players, Chris Judd.
In 2010 Amy successfully defended her World Junior Track cycling gold medal in the scratch race and also won in both the individual and team pursuits, breaking two world record in the process. She continued her progress in 2011 and earlier this year Amy was 4th in the Points Race Cycling Australia Track National Championships.
The Tasmanian-born Amy moved to Adelaide where the Australian track cycling is based and moved into the family of Jack Trengove, the Melbourne co-captain. Jack’s sister Jess has also qualified for the London Olympic Games in the marathon so they have shared notes about training and preparations for the ‘biggest show on earth’.
It is at the Trengove home that Amy’s love of Carlton shines out with Jess Trengove admitting Amy has taken the red out of all her brother’s Melbourne stuff and has even hung up photos of Bryce Gibbs and Chris Judd.
Amy recently emailed the Club about the build up to the London Olympics:
We have currently been in Holland racing and training on the road where yesterday I finished 2nd in one of Holland’s most prestigious women's road tours, RaboSter and also coming home with the Young Riders Jersey.
However the road work is now down and it’s time to get back focused on the track. On Wednesday we will be heading into Switzerland for 2 weeks to start knuckling down on a lot of track work before heading into Italy for our last preparation camp where we will be fine tuning every small detail in our event 'The Women's Teams Pursuit' before we head into the Olympic Village.
So excited!
We all look forward to cheering on “Carlton’s Own” Amy Cure in the London Olympics
