Carlton CEO Greg Swann says the AFL’s Trade Period is “way too long” and he expects the bulk of deals won’t be done until the final days.

The trade period opened on Monday 7 October, and doesn’t conclude until 2pm on Friday 25 October. ?

Swann has told SEN a 10-day trade window would be sufficient.

“To be perfectly honest it’s not fair on the players, there’s a lot of pressure on them,” Swann said. “Also from an administrator’s point of view it just goes for too long.

“It’s a bit like school homework; when you know you’ve got three weeks you wait until the end to do it all, so most of the deals will probably get done next week.

“All that really happens is there’s a lot of speculation in the meantime, and most of it’s not right.”

Swann says Carlton is close to a deal with Brisbane on talented young defender Sam Docherty, but the hunt for a key forward is proving somewhat more difficult.

“They’re hard to come by,” Swann said. “Those who have got them are hanging on to them, and some of the guys who are out there, well we’ve had a look and we will see what happens.

“We’re in the mix for them, but we’re not going to do it at any price.”
