New Carlton assistant coach Dean Laidley says his focus this year will be on making his charges the very best they can be.

Laidley, who brings some 27 years of VFL/AFL experience to the Club, signed with the Blues in October.

It came after stints as an assistant at St Kilda and Port Adelaide, which followed seven years as the senior coach at North Melbourne.

The 46-year-old says in all his time in football, the fundamentals of the game haven’t changed: you’ve still got to win the footy.

So Laidley’s strategy for Carlton’s midfield will be about keeping it simple.

“There’s so much going on these days out there, the players have got to make a lot of quick decisions and a lot of decisions,” Laidley said.

“So just keeping it really simple for them and teaching them to read the queues of the game of football – also the mental aspect of it is really important.”

Work at stoppages is an area Laidley has identified as a strength, but he believes the Blues need to work at winning more of the football and using those disposals effectively.

And when it comes to improvement Laidley says his focus will be on players’ individual talents.

“Sometimes we bring them into football clubs and only have them work on their room for improvement,” Laidley said.

“But I think that what you’ve drafted them on – if they’re a good kick or a good mark – let’s be the best mark or the best kick we can possibly be.”
