The controversial decision to give Australian batsman Usman Khawaja out in the Third Test even has Carlton Coach Mick Malthouse perplexed.

Malthouse began his Friday morning media conference by asking journalists why the batsman was dismissed.

“I reckon I could be 90 and my eyes fading and I could do better than that,” Malthouse said.

But one thing the Blues coach isn’t questioning is the defensive capabilities of the Dockers.

Carlton takes on Fremantle at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, and Malthouse admits it will be a big test.

“We’re playing Fremantle, we’re playing a side that’s in good touch, in good form, has got a good record on that ground, and is challenging for the top four.

“We’re challenging for the top eight, so it should be a good game of footy and we’re looking forward to the contest.”

The Blues have won their past three games in a row.

Malthouse says his team has been steadily improving all season, but will have to make the most of opportunities to get over the line against Fremantle.

“We’ve had to fight for each victory there’s no question about that.

“We haven’t been able to go out there and crunch sides, but we’ve done enough to beat sides in and around us, or those that have threatened us.

“We’ve won on the road, we’ve won on the bogy ground, which is Etihad, so that’s now been put to bed.

“Our reserves are winning, and there’s a good feeling at the Club.”
