This week everyone at the Carlton football club has experienced the two sides of cancer.

As Sam Rowe made his triumphant return from his illness by competing in the City2Surf, a much loved staff member, Sophia Saly, lost her battle with this insidious disease.

Any Carlton supporter that has attended a Best & Fairest, Grand Final Eve lunch, Hall of Fame or Family Day would be familiar with Sophia's work. As the club's Event Manager she was responsible for countless Carlton Football Club events, however, ‘Soph’ was so much more than her work.

She had an infectious, mischievous personality with a wicked sense of humour that often leaned towards the inappropriate. In an industry that has a tendency to take itself far too seriously ‘Soph’ was a grounding force - an individual with limitless positivity and laughter.

Here at Carlton, ‘Soph’ made some incredible friendships and her passing is being felt strongly not only by those who worked closest with her, but everyone she came into contact with during her time at Carlton. She was genuine and had a generosity of spirit that drew people to her and instantly made them feel welcome.

At just 29, Sophia was taken from us far too early. However, at this time of incredible sadness we are overwhelmed with gratitude to have known her.

Carlton President Stephen Kernahan acknowledged the impact Sophia made on the Carlton Football Club, from board level to players.

“It was impossible not to be drawn to Sophia when she walked into a room, her smile was infectious and her bubbly disposition made her popular with all staff members and colleagues,” he said.

“She will be deeply missed by everyone within the Carlton family and our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.”

This weekend the team will pay tribute to her fine contribution to our club by wearing black armbands.

Rest in peace, sweet Sophia.
