Over the next two weeks, as the 2015 AFL Trade Period gets underway, we’ll count down Carlton’s top-10 trades over the past 30 years.
Which stars reinvigorated their careers donning the Navy Blue? And who made Carlton their second home?
Coming in at No.8: Sam Docherty
The Trade: In 2013 the Blues traded their second-round draft pick (number 33 overall) to the Brisbane Lions for Sam Docherty. Brisbane picked up Tom Cutler who has since played 18 games for the Lions.
Growing up as a Blues supporter, young Carlton defender Sam Docherty was delighted to be traded to the Blues at the end of the 2013 season.
The 21-year-old was originally taken by the Lions with their first round selection (selection 12 overall) in the 2011 AFL Draft.

At the time of the deal, Carlton’s Head of Football Andrew McKay said the silky-skilled half-back was a terrific addition for the Blues.
“It’s fantastic to pick up a quality player who has been a Carlton supporter all his life,” McKay said.
When Docherty arrived at Ikon Park, there was no doubting his passion for the Blues and his desire to play for the guernsey.
“I can’t wait to put the jumper on, it’s a dream come true,” Docherty said on October 24, 2013.
“Obviously growing up (barracking) for them and now getting here – I can’t think of anything better.”

Ever since he’s donned the famous jumper, Docherty has continued to impress – growing in stature beyond his years.
In 2015, the young defender averaged 21 disposals in his 19 games and had the most rebound 50s of any player at the Blues, with an average of 4.21 per match. He also came third 3rd at the Club for kicks per game with an average of 13.68.
Docherty’s consistent season was recognised by the AFL Players’ Association with his inclusion in the AFLPA’s 22Under22 squad.
The talented young defender signed a three-year deal in May, keeping him in the navy blue until at least the end of the 2018 season.

There’s no doubt this young Blue will be part of Carlton’s future success.
