After being recruited with pick 60 in the 2014 National Draft, Clem Smith impressed early to make his AFL debut in Round 1 against the Tigers.
Throughout the year the No.25 showcased his explosive pace and physicality by chasing down opponents, which is a mark of his game.
In Round 19’s clash with Collingwood Smith had 12 disposals (four contested) and four tackles.
The 19-year-old managed to play seven games in his first season of AFL footy and he’ll be hoping to add to his career highlights next year.
HE SAID IT
“JB called me on the phone and told me I was playing so I was pretty happy and glad to be back in the team. I’ve been working hard to get back in the side – it’s a lot different to VFL footy and a big step up.”
- Clem Smith talking to CFC TV after returning to the side in Round 18 against North Melbourne.
THEY SAID IT
“Clem’s going well. He’s another of our new boys so he too is obviously on a 75 per cent workload. It’s a big step from Under 18s to our regime, but Clem’s got his body fat down enormously which is great, and he’s done a very good job. I think he might be an important player for us up forward. He’s got some tricks. He’s an exciting player.”
- Carlton’s Head of Football Andrew McKay speaking about Smith in February during his first AFL pre-season.
SEASON HIGHLIGHT
As well as playing seven AFL games, Smith also played 12 matches for the Northern Blues in the VFL. In Round 19 of the VFL he had 30 touches and kicked three goals against the Box Hill Hawks.
