The Northern Blues capped off a perfect weekend for Carlton-affiliated teams with a 40-point win over Frankston today.

After a 297-day absence, the Blues returned to Ikon Park and marked the occasion with their biggest win of the season, walking away 15. 15. (105) to 9. 11. (65) winners.

The Dolphins came out of the blocks and stuck with the Blues all day, before Northern kicked away late.

After a quick Frankston start, Jack Silvagni gave the Blues a spark up forward, kicking three goals in the first quarter alone with two coming from strong contested marking.

The Blues started to get the ascendancy in the middle, winning the clearances comprehensively and getting first use in difficult conditions.

The subsequent two quarters started similarly to the first, with Frankston getting the opening two goals while the Blues struggled to transition the ball out of defence.

Answering goals from Kristian Jaksch and Liam Jones in each quarter against the run of play to keep Frankston at arm’s length, which was largely the story of the day.

Both sides kicked 2.4 for the quarter and the Dolphins certainly missed an opportunity to get back into the game early in the quarter, but had to settle for no change in the margin at the break.

The Blues broke the trend of slow starts, kicking the first goal through Jason Tutt before Silvagni’s fourth opened up a 27-point lead.

It capped off a brilliant day for Silvagni, who accompanied his four goals with 21 disposals and seven marks to be one of his side’s best players.

Frankston kicked the next two goals which saw the game in the balance, before Hisham Kerbatieh broke a 10-minute goal drought before the Blues kicked away.

Goals to Cameron Wood, Tim Totevski and Kerbatieh capped off a seven-goal final term for Northern, who won back-to-back games for the first time in nearly 12 months.

Mark Whiley was the leading disposal winner with 31 to be named his side’s best, while Tutt was next best with 26 and a goal.

Speaking post-match, Carlton second-year rookie Billy Gowers said it was pleasing to come away with the four points for the second straight week.

Gowers, who finished with 22 disposals, said it was a brutal mindset and ability to adapt in the conditions which got the Blues a hard-fought win.

“It was especially good given the conditions to get the four points, the playing group dug in and it was great to come away with our second straight win,” Gowers said.

“We came into the match with a brutal focus on winning the hard ball - we had 23 players putting their head over the ball and cracking in.”

The Northern Blues’ next test comes on Saturday afternoon, travelling to Box Hill City Oval to face the Hawks in one of the biggest tests the VFL has to offer.
