Two weeks ago, on Saturday, 28th July 2012, a huge group of 150 new international students from the University of Melbourne had the privilege of being invited to watch their first ever AFL match.

Students were invited by Carlton Football Club as part of their ongoing commitment to developing the game in Melbourne’s diverse and vibrant international communities.

The students were amazed at how physical the game was and impressed by the crowd’s sheer engagement with the game—a testimony to the amount of passion Aussies have for this intriguing game. A highlight for the students was towards the end of the match, when they witnessed Carlton’s epic last minute a goal against their rivals, sealing their victory against Richmond Football Club. It sure was an exhilarating match!

“AFL runs in the blood of Melburnians. Therefore, it is only natural that the first thing to show new international students was Footy. The participants had not only a fabulous cultural experience, but also formed lasting bonds with their mates!” said Zong Yuan Chuah, the Vice-President (Education and Welfare) of Melbourne University Overseas Students Service (MUOSS).

This initiative grew out of MUOSS’s Buddy program, the aim of which is to showcase and introduce Melbourne’s culture to new international students of the University. Carlton Football Club’s Multicultural Program provided MUOSS with the invaluable platform to showcase this awesome aspect of Melburnian culture, especially since they are our Home team.

MUOSS expresses huge gratitude for Mr. Ned Murphy, the Multicultural Partnership Coordinator of Carlton Football Club, for this valuable experience, for his willingness to coordinate this program and his generous assistance.
