Carlton CEO Greg Swann said he was disappointed with the AFL’s decision that Chris Judd’s private arrangements with Visy would now be included in Carlton’s Total Player Payments.

“While the AFL has said it needed to tighten the criteria for the approval of such third party arrangements, due to the advent of free agency, it is incredible to think the changes are being made in the final year of an existing six-year deal that has already been approved by the AFL,” Swann said.

“While the actual agreement does not involve Carlton, this decision does impact on the Club, however we have not been advised on what has made the AFL change its mind on this matter. There has been no explanation other than a decision has been made.

“I expect a number of other clubs will also be asking about this decision as there are currently 78 players with similar third party independent agreements, and a further 80 with employment agreements in the AFL, and as such I am sure this decision will not impact Chris Judd alone.

“This decision by Adrian Anderson will require us to make alterations to our total player payments for the 2013 season, however it will not impact on the playing group and we will continue to operate within the AFL rules in relation to player payments,” Swann added.

As this is a private arrangement between Judd and Visy, Swann said the future of the deal was a matter for Visy and Judd’s manager to discuss.
