WITH the new crop of 2017 recruits put through their paces on the Sunshine Coast as part of the Blues’ pre-season camp, captain Marc Murphy has been on hand to offer up some sound advice for the new youngsters.
“Initially it’s about acting like a sponge and just soaking it in and asking a lot of questions of the guys around them (youngsters). There’s a lot of information as a young player to take in, about a lot of areas of our game, and what it takes to be a professional athlete," Murphy said.
With the skipper rooming with 2017 number No.3 draft pick Paddy Dow and 2016 recruit Paddy Kerr, Murphy has been more than willing to provide some insight into his experiences as an AFL player.
“They’re asking about players I’ve played with in the past and how we have gone about it over the journey, as well as some of the things we’re trying to implement. We’ve got some really good characters around the place, and I’m really looking forward to seeing those guys flourish over the years.”
As the Blues continue their training camp on the Sunshine Coast ahead of the Christmas break, Murphy believes the benefits of a camp are immense.
“It’s a good chance to get away and learn about each other’s backgrounds, where they come from and basically get to know each other better. The younger guys can watch what some of the older guys eat – it’s a simple thing but the little things all add up – the way guys prepare for training," he said.
“It’s also a good chance to get away for a week and learn from each other and really think deep about what makes each other tick. They know the more we can do that and grow as a group and be really tight-knit, the better off we’ll be on game day.”
Heading into his 12th season, 30-year-old Murphy says his body is "feeling really good".
“I’m 30 now, but the body is feeling really good. I haven’t really missed a session, which is really pleasing. It gives you more of a chance to teach the other guys out on the track, not just off the track, so it’s good being out there working with some of these young blokes – they’re bloody fit so it’s keeping me on my toes , which is great.”
With partner Jessie due to give birth to the couple’s first child within the next month, there’s no doubt exciting times are ahead for the Blues skipper.
“It’s getting pretty close now, three or four weeks to go before the little fella joins us. We’re looking forward to a lack of sleep! Jessie is doing well so it’s a really exciting time.”
