“TODAY hurts, but that’s footy.”

While the 2019 AFLW Grand Final didn’t go to plan for Darcy Vescio and Carlton, the star forward couldn’t help but speak of her admiration for her teammates.

Vescio couldn’t add to her four premierships with the Darebin Falcons, as the Blues went down by 45 points to a rampaging Adelaide.

Conceding that the Grand Final obviously didn’t pan out as desired, Vescio said the building blocks had been laid for a great team for the future.

“I’m disappointed but there’s so much more to come,” Vescio said post-match.

“Adelaide was too strong today but we’ve built so much these past three season. This season, it has come to fruition a lot more than others.

“I’m so proud to be part of this group, to wear the Navy Blue jumper.”

Previously, the biggest crowd which Vescio played in front of was the 24,568 who attended Ikon Park for the historic first game of the AFL Women’s competition — she kicked four goals that famous night.

Despite today’s loss, Vescio said it was important to realise where the Blues had come from to get to a point where they could play in front a record crowd of 53,034.

“It was about recognising how far we’ve come,” she said.

“We’ll be back. We’ll be back bigger and stronger.

“It meant so much to look into the crowd and see so many people in the Navy Blue. It means a lot — we play for the people.”
