SPEAKING to media Tuesday morning, Buck was singing the praises of the individual efforts amongst a well-rounded team result against West Coast that led to the Blues’ emphatic win in the West.
Buck focused on the Round 3 Rising Star nominee Keeley Skepper, who has impressed the coaching staff with her improvement and determination since arriving at Carlton.
Skepper’s effort of three goals, 23 disposals and ten contested possessions showed her future leadership qualities and was assisted with improved delivery from the midfield, with Buck voicing his delight with how well she has adapted to being a role player and the execution of her skills
“She’s made amazing strides since the day I walked in, she’s really gone to work on her high performance and her professionalism towards her football," Buck said.
"She’s really clear on the role she needs to play for us which is great, but it’s all a credit to her, she’s put in the hard work and is a real professional now”.
Breann Moody’s rotation from the ruck to the forward line paid off in Buck’s eyes, with her ability to hit the scoreboard and provide movement through the midfield being met with high praise from her teammates.
Buck is happy with the balance Moody had against West Coast and believes they’ve found the right ratio between Moody and Jess Good in the ruck, applauding Good’s efforts as the duo collectively dominated the stoppages in Round 3.
“We’re trying to develop a bit of a balance with 'Moods' around her forward and ruck time, and it was great that she hit the scoreboard as well playing a little bit forward over in Perth” Buck said.
“The balance certainly when she’s in the ruck, she’s pretty dynamic but what we know is that Jess Good is a really great ruck as well, so we want to compliment both of them as much as we can in-game, but Moods’ ruck time on the weekend was probably a better balance than the first two games”.
It’s early days, but Buck is happy with how the Blues have been tracking going into their Round 4 clash with Richmond at IKON Park on Saturday.
Like any season, there are elements of the game that have impressed Buck and there are parts that he knows will develop over time.
Buck takes all feedback on board and knows his players are well aware of what is and isn’t working, which is a testament to their ability to focus on development and knowing the internal values of the team.
“We have parts of our game that we think are holding up really well and other parts that we’re really trying to get to work on, so the feedback from games is really important, but I think what we’re focusing on internally is probably more important," he said.
“We know there’s a lot of areas where we can improve on and hopefully it holds up this week.
"We might get some good feedback from the 'Tiges' but we’ll keep chasing what we need to chase”.
Looking ahead to Richmond, Buck is aware of their strengths and is already eagerly awaiting locking horns with the Tigers.
All-in-all, he knows what’s best for the Blues and will be honing in on what they well and brushing up on ways to mitigate the Tigers’ strengths.
“Richmond are a good side and I think their contest work is really strong, so we’ll be up for that and if we can get our contest right and focus on what we do in terms on the defensive aspect of the game, that’s what we’ll go after” he said.
“But mainly we’ll focus on us and what we need to do and hopefully that’ll handle Richmond”
Away from football, this is a big week for the Carlton Football Club, with the game against the Tigers being the annual AFLW Carlton Respects game.
Being a values-driven person, Buck has taken quickly to the Carlton Respects initiative and has implemented parts of the program into his coaching and applauds what it has done for the Club and the wider community.
“I think the online program which we provide for schools and the community is great for gender equality and stopping violence before it starts," he said.
“I’m a big advocate for helping children in our community and I think our Carlton Respects program is a top-shelf one that everyone can utilise."
