After securing three new recruits through the AFL Trade Period, the focus of Carlton’s recruiting team is now on the National Draft.
The Blues expect to use up to five selections in the upcoming draft, the first of which will be the final pick of the first round, No. 19 overall.
Here’s how Carlton’s selections have fallen:
Round 1: selection 19 (traded to Carlton from GWS as part of the Jaksch/Whiley deal)
Round 2: selection 28
Round 3: nil
Round 4: selection 61 (received from Melbourne in Jeff Garlett trade)
Round 4: selection 65
Round 5: selection 79 (received from Melbourne in Jeff Garlett trade)
Round 6: selection 101
Round 7: selection 119
In the first round of the draft Collingwood has committed to selecting Darcy Moore with pick No. 9 as a father-son selection, while Sydney has committed to selecting academy player Isaac Heeney with selection No. 18. That effectively means Carlton will have the 17th selection from the pool of other draft hopefuls.
One player that remains in the Blues’ sights is Western Bulldog Jason Tutt. A deal to trade Tutt to Carlton could not be finalised within the trade window, but Carlton’s national recruiting manager Shane Rogers remains optimistic.
“We were really hopeful to get Jason and it’s disappointing for him obviously,” Rogers told CFC TV.
“We’re committed to him and Jason’s committed to us, so we’re going to work our bums off to get him through to the pre-season draft.
“What it will mean for our supporters (is) we will pass in one of our national draft picks, which will be an extra pick, and we’ll try and pick Jason up through that pre-season draft period.”
The NAB AFL National Draft will be held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on Thursday 27 November. The pre-season and rookie drafts are due to take place on Wednesday 3 December.
