CARLTON’S VFL affiliate, the Northern Bullants, returned to the winner's list on Saturday afternoon when they defeated last year's grand finalists Port Melbourne by 43 points at NAB Oval.

They are now placed sixth on the ladder with just percentage separating the top seven sides. Williamstown lead the table, followed by Sandringham, Coburg, Box Hill and Port Melbourne.

Coach David Teague shares his thoughts on the match and how some of the Carlton-listed players performed in the big win.

It was a very good team performance. We were coming up against Port Melbourne, who were runners up last year, and as they are older and more experienced, it was always going to be a tough game.

But our boys adapted to the windy conditions well and played really good football.

Our pressure was the most pleasing aspect for me. We were kicking into a strong breeze in the first quarter and we outscored them anyway. Most of our play started with our pressure, and then when we did get our hands on the ball, we moved it well.

Another pleasing thing was the fact that every single player played their role. No one dominated as such, but we had no below average players. Everyone did what they had to.

Chris Yarran had a good game. He had 10 tackles and got the opportunity to kick three goals. It was one of his better performances.

He's going in the right direction to make his debut at senior level. I don't know if he's ready as yet and that will be decided by the senior match committee, but he's definitely improving with each week and has the capabilities to play at AFL level.

Our best players were Richard Hadley, who came back and led from the front in the middle with contested ball, and Greg Bentley and Mitch Robinson as the other two onballers who played really well.

Adam Hartlett had a change of roles and went down back, and he found a bit of the footy and used it pretty well at times. He also kept Adrian Bonaddio, who is probably one of the powerhouse forwards in the competition, to one goal.

He had support from Joey Anderson and Mark Austin down in the back half, who were both very good.

It was a tough day for forwards with the windy conditions but Brad Fisher played a very important role. He had to do a lot of team things, which didn't equate to possessions, but he was lively early and gave us an option going forward. He played his role really well.

Jordan Bannister has been solid across halfback and again did his job. I don't remember any contests where he got beaten one-on-one. He always gave us confidence when the ball went into our backline that he, Anderson or Austin would be quick to rebound it.

He's getting more confidence in his body after having hamstring problems. He's starting to run with the ball a bit more and take them on. He's very quick when he gets going and that's probably the part of his game that has been lacking in the past couple of weeks.

Shaun Hampson in the ruck came up against some of the better VFL ruckmen and he jumped all over them and got his hands on the ball. His ruck work control was very good, better than it has been, and he followed up with some great tackles and second efforts.

He will push for senior selection in the next couple of weeks.

We were allowed a 23rd player with the rules so next week we're going to have to drop someone, and Jeff Garlett didn't play because of injury so he's going to have to come into consideration and possibly Shaun Grigg as well.

We've got Frankston and they haven't won a game at this stage, but we played them in a practice match and it was very close. They'll be keen to come up against us and we'll need to be switched on.
