OVERVIEW
In one of the hard luck stories of the year, Rhys O’Keeffe’s season was cruelly crippled by a white staph infection in his left heel. In a remarkable comeback, he managed to return through the VFL, having an immediate impact for the Northern Blues with his run and penetrating kicking.

Unfortunately for O’Keeffe, he was unable to crack a spot in the senior side and was delisted by Carlton at the end of the 2013 season.

HE SAID IT
“I always thought I was going to eventually play again, but I didn’t think I’d be playing this year. I didn’t think I’d be out there this early, so it’s a credit to the medical staff and the fitness co-ordinator ‘JC’’(Justin Cordy).” – O’Keeffe on his return from injury, July 18.

THEY SAID IT
“O’Keeffe’s return to football after a five-month injury lay off was one of the many good news stories for the Blues, the South Australian finishing with 15 possessions at nearly 65 per cent game time.” – Northern Blues review of O’Keeffe’s return to football in the VFL against Box Hill, July 20.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
Despite a long injury layoff, O’Keeffe hardly looked like he had missed a beat when he returned for the last six games of the season. His most impressive performance came in Round 18 against Werribee, where he recorded 31-disposals and kicked two goals.
