With the club already committed to Dylan Buckley with selection 62 under the father/son rule, and only two selections remaining for Carlton in the countdown to tomorrow night’s 2011 AFL National Draft in Sydney, The Age’s football writer and respected draft analyst Emma Quayle believes the Blues can land two significant recruits at 22 and 44 respectively.

In fact, Quayle is of the view that with its first selection Carlton could quite easily secure a player who slips through the net.

“There’s definitely a chance a top ten could get through,” Quayle said. “You’ve got to remember that club lists and rankings are so different, and the recruiters are for example split in their judgment of some of the taller, key position players.

“That’s why it’d be a very interesting exercise to see each of the clubs’ pre-draft lists after the event, as I reckon their ratings would all be very different.”

While Quayle again reinforced the belief that Carlton is well-placed at 22 given its sound list with depth in most areas, “you can never have too many talls or on-ballers and this draft looks as though it will offer a fair bit of both”.

And she volunteered the name of Perth’s Fraser McInnes as a potential pick 22 player.

Asked to elaborate, Quayle said “Fraser’s a tall forward from Perth who’s had an interrupted year with injuries, but 11 or 12 clubs have spoken to him, which is why the Blues would have to look at him with their first pick”.

As for selection 44, Quayle said she was mindful of the rumour that Carlton may pitch for a player out of left field, “but who it is is anyone’s guess. The word is that the Blues have a big surprise in store for us all”.

“Given that it’s not an overly inspiring year with all the good 17 year-olds going to GWS as part of the club’s concessions there’ll still be players in the 40s, 50s and 60s who’ll be good players,” she said.
