CARLTON senior assistant coach Alan Richardson says he still has senior coaching ambitions, but maintains he hasn't given the vacant Port Adelaide job a moment's thought with the Blues still an outside chance to make this year's finals.

Richardson, who also has coaching experience with the Western Bulldogs, Collingwood and Essendon, is highly regarded within industry circles and has the credentials to take on the top job at an AFL club.

He certainly didn't rule himself out of the running for the Power job when he spoke to the media on Friday, but was adamant his focus will remain with Carlton until the end of the season.

"I have given it absolutely no thought, to be honest, given that we've had some real issues in terms of our own team," Richardson said from Visy Park.

"My focus is absolutely there until the end of the year and then we'll see what happens from there, but [right now] it's all about Carlton and the role I play here.

"[I] absolutely [have senior ambitions], if the right opportunity presented itself. I'm in a situation where I can't be too choosy, obviously, but it's all about Carlton [now] and making sure that we finish off on a really positive note.

"Hopefully that means we play in September."

The Blues need to win their four remaining home-and-away games and hope Essendon, North Melbourne and Fremantle, who are all two wins ahead of Carlton, fall in a hole.

Richardson admits his club will need "a bit of luck" to make the finals, but he says that remains the goal.

Beating the visiting Brisbane Lions on Saturday night is the first part of the Blues' finals equation with stopping Lions' skipper Jonathan Brown high on the agenda.

"Brown is back in really good form and given that we've lost [Michael] Jamison, that obviously presents some issues for us, so we'll have to be really good back there," Richardson said.

"It could potentially be a combination of guys [who get the job on Brown]. Young [Matthew] Watson is going to come back into the team, so he'll obviously get an opportunity and Simon White played his second game [this season] last week.

"[Brown is] a fantastic player, he's certainly found some form, but we think it's really exciting for our young guys to get an opportunity to see … them grow and therefore make us a better footy club."
