BOTH making a huge impact in the Carlton forward line this year, Matt Owies and Josh Honey take solace in the fact that they can bounce off each other.

Playing similar roles, having similar strengths and personalities is what the pair have attributed to their strong friendship.

Developing together in the VFL program, both Honey and Owies got their shot in the senior side in 2021, loving their time playing on the big stage.

“It was pretty awesome,” Owies said.

“It was a bit of a dream come true and I look forward to the off season and getting into next year, hopefully building into the team too.”

“I had to wait a little bit for my opportunity but I was very grateful when I got it” Honey said.

“I was stoked to get out there, loving it and having fun, and I’m excited to take that confidence into next year and hopefully play a few more games.”

Kicking 21 goals between them, Owies and Honey put their positive VFL form to good use in the AFL side, trying to show off their strengths and one up each other.

“I know I take bits and pieces from Josh’s game that I see him do,” Owies said.

“It frustrates me sometimes to see him do something I haven’t done, so I take a lot of confidence from seeing Josh perform then knowing that we’re similar players and I can go out and do the same things to some degree.”

In terms of improving their game over the off-season, the pair agreed they both want to work on speed, power and refining their skills on the field to hold them in good stead for pre-season.

“Personally, I want to improve my speed and power around the contest and also just fine tune some kicking stuff,” Owies said.

“I think the major thing is to take the year, reflect on it, and have a lot of confidence out of that and hopefully that builds in the off-season and into the pre-season.”

“We’re very similar players, so strength and power, I’ll keep working on that and refining my skills and making those better,” Honey added.
