IT WAS a moment in football which Patrick Cripps admits gave him goosebumps.
And it wasn’t even on the big stage of the MCG.
Rather, it was at a captain’s run in 2019 in Western Australia, when the Blues were preparing for what would be a famous win over Fremantle at Optus Stadium.
Speaking on the Talking Gibber-Fish podcast, Cripps, Zac Fisher and Michael Gibbons were discussing the impact of the Club’s Western Australian supporters who the Blues won’t be able to play in front of this weekend.
In what was Gibbons’ first season at the Club, the No.40 told a story of the team’s training session which took the forward by surprise.
“‘Rick’ was actually out with a little injury. It was the captain’s run and the boys had run out onto the ground at this point,” Gibbons said.
“I didn’t realise how big of a following the Blues had in WA, and the boys got a big cheer.
“Halfway through the captain’s run, there was this almighty roar.
“It was like God himself had walked out, and it was ‘The Big Drip’ [Cripps]. It was a pretty incredible scene.”
Cripps missed that game with a toe injury, but flew over for the trip across the Nullabor to his home state to see a win sealed by a Marc Murphy banana.
For the co-captain, it was an example of the following the Blues have all over the country, and one which he is always grateful for.
“There are moments in footy when you get goosebumps and that was one,” Cripps said.
“It’s amazing how big Carlton is when you go to different states and you still have a big crowd. I do remember that.
“It’s always good to get home and play in front of friends and family as well as the WA Bluebaggers.”
