McKay has also confirmed on Trade Radio that Blues veteran Heath Scotland will remain at the Club next year.
"He's (Docherty's) a round one draft pick and a quality player so we'd expect him to be in our top 22, probably coming off that half-back wing area," McKay said.
"I think his strength is his ball delivery by foot, so I'm looking forward to seeing that in action. He's a pretty good athlete too, so he's quite a footballer."
Carlton lodged paperwork with the AFL to secure Docherty this afternoon after finalising a trade with Brisbane.
In exchange, the Lions will receive a second round draft pick, currently No.33 overall.
It comes less than 24-hours before the trade window closes, but McKay says the Blues may not be done at the trading table just yet, after speaking to Sydney's Andrejs Everitt.
Carlton views Everitt as another possible swingman, and at 194cm tall, he'd add some welcome height.
"He (Everitt) can go forward and hopefully cause a bit of trouble," McKay said. "He's that height where he's still mobile and that hopefully will cause a few problems – if he's wearing the Navy Blue, not if he's wearing Swans colours."
Meanwhile McKay has confirmed veteran Blue Heath Scotland will be at the Club next season, after the 33-year-old confirmed he wants to play on.
But paperwork for Scotland is yet to be finalised.
