Yarran's Goal of the Year
Carlton’s Chris Yarran has been awarded the AFL Goal of the Year for his brilliant Round One running goal from the boundary against Richmond back in March.
Yarran accepted a handball from Chris Judd and proceeded to take on and beat two Richmond opponents as he also avoided running out of bounce before breaking clear to kick the goal from 35m out at the Punt Road end of the MCG.
In the words of Channel 7 commentator, Bruce McAvaney, the run included a “cheeky little bounce” and the type of pace that has generated plenty of excitement for Carlton fans over the last couple of seasons.
Perhaps the goal was best summed up by Bruce when after the ball went between the big sticks he simply said, “It’s as good as you’ll ever see”.
The 3AW Football Panel also agreed awarding the round one goal the best of the year during the pre-Grand Final Show from the MCG on Saturday. For Chris Yarran, who went to the MCG to accept the awards, it was his first opportunity to meet his new coach, Mick Malthouse who was a panellist on 3AW for the pre-game show.
When asked by fellow commentator Dwayne Russell if he had any advice for his new coach, Chris Yarran cheekily said, “Yes play me in the midfield”
