The Carlton Football Club is pleased to announce that respected AFL assistant coach Paul Williams will join the Blues coaching panel for Season 2012.

Appointed to the new role of midfield stoppage coach, Williams spent two years as the Melbourne Football Club’s midfield coach before moving to the Western Bulldogs as an assistant coach at the end of 2008, in the role of forward line coach for two seasons and as the midfield coach in 2011.

Carlton Senior Coach Brett Ratten said the appointment was a major boost for the club.

“Paul will bring to our club valuable coaching experience, particularly in relation to his stoppage knowledge in the midfield,” Ratten said.

“He has had great success as a player and has been involved in successful programs not only as a player but also a coach, so we are very much looking forward to having him join our coaching staff.”

The former Collingwood and Sydney star has played 306 AFL games (1991-2006) and was a member of the Swans’ 2005 premiership side.

Williams will join current Carlton midfield coach Mark Riley, as well as ruck coach Matthew Capuano - whose role will also now encompass player development.
