Ruby a fully-fledged 21st century Blue
Ruby Owen was a regular at Carlton games in Melbourne throughout 2009. Whether at the MCG or at Etihad Stadium, Ruby fervently followed her beloved Blues, lending Chris Judd and co. her vocal support with older brother Thomas and father Peter well within earshot.
Not that 2009 was exactly a one-off for Ruby. As the club’s membership records surely attest, the nine year-old’s been on the books since June 2000, when good old Dad registered her as a Carlton junior member.
“I follow Carlton through my Dad and my brother Thomas. They’re all Carlton supporters,” said Ruby, a year three student at Surrey Hills Primary.
“They used to kick a footy in the back yard and up at the park, I really liked that, and that’s when I started to follow the footy and the Carlton players.
“I have a favourite, it’s Chris Judd and he’s really good. Matthew Kreuzer’s another one. Me and Dad always scream out ‘Kroooooooooooooooze’ when he gets the ball, and I like Marc Murphy and [Bryce] Gibbs too.”
Ruby’s mother Christine said her daughter’s wall space was cluttered with all manner of Carlton paraphernalia. “There are posters up in her room and she can’t wait to get to games . . . she’s a real Blue believer,” said Christine.
Like father like daughter it seems . . . but what prompted Dad’s lifelong interest in Carlton in the first place?
“Would you believe that Peter’s mother liked the color of the jumper,” Christine said. That’s why he initially became a Carlton supporter . . . the dark navy blue is such a classy color.”
