The Carlton Football Club has officially announced Mick Malthouse as the senior coach of the Club for the next three seasons.

Carlton President Stephen Kernahan issued the following statement in relation to the appointment that was announced at Visy Park this morning:

We are delighted to welcome Mick Malthouse to the Carlton Football Club in his new role as senior coach.

Following the last game of the 2012 season we commenced discussions with Mick and his Manager and these discussions were completed yesterday when we agreed to this three-year term.

The Board of the Carlton Football Club made the decision to change our senior coach at the end of the 2012 season because we wanted an experienced coach that we believe will deliver long-term success for the Carlton Football Club.

Mick Malthouse in not only an experienced coach he is also a premiership coach. Importantly the Carlton Football Club has the services of, not just the best coach available, but the best coach.

The most successful coaches in the history of the Carlton Football Club are those that have come from other clubs. David Parkin, Ron Barassi, Percy Bentley and Jack Worrall all coached Carlton to multiple flags after joining the Blues from other clubs.

Mick has an outstanding coaching record following a playing career of 174 matches that included the 1980 premiership. He has coached 664 matches, the second most in AFL history, at three clubs in a 28-year senior coaching career.

•    135 Games with the Western Bulldogs between 1984 and 1989
•    243 Games with West Coast between 1990 and 1999
•    286 Games with Collingwood between 2000 and 2011

•    664 Games with a winning ratio of 57%
•    In 28 seasons he has coached 50 Finals over 19 Finals Series including eight Grand Finals and three Premierships.

In our discussions with Mick over the last week it is obvious the 12 months he has been involved in the media has reinvigorated his desire to coach and has provided him with a further insight into football in 2012 through his role as a media commentator.

The Carlton Football Club had shown continued improvement since 2007, competing in three consecutive finals series until this year. The 2012 season was very inconsistent and throughout recent seasons we have been unable to defeat the top sides.

We are confident Mick Malthouse will lead this team to the next level and deliver long-term success for the Carlton Football Club.
