Teague keen on coaching role
Former best and fairest David Teague has put up his hand for one of the vacant assistant coaching job
The former Carlton best and fairest winner is already on the Blues’ payroll in a development role as well as coach of their VFL affiliate, who will line up in its second consecutive grand final on Sunday.
Teague, who has coached the Bullants for the past three years, says he is interested in pursuing an assistant coaching role, potentially at the Blues.
“It’s the next step in the progression. My next big goal is to coach AFL football at senior level and to get there I have to look at what the best avenue is,” he told afl.com.au.
“Line coaching is the next step for me but when I take that I’ll just have to wait and see.”
The Blues have already announced three changes to their coaching structure for next year with Robert Harvey leaving to take up a role at his former club St Kilda.
Brett Montgomery and Matthew Lappin are also departing after a mutual decision was made not to extend their coaching contracts.
Teague has an inside lane when it comes to applying for the role given he is already entrenched within the Blues and has worked with their young players since 2008.
He commenced his coaching career at the Bullants in that season as playing coach and has lifted the affiliated side into the finals each year since.
Teague said his future would be decided by Carlton coach Brett Ratten after Sunday’s VFL grand final at Etihad Stadium.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time [at Carlton] and I think the club has an exciting future. That decision will be made by them,” he said.
“I’m really enjoying my time at the Bullants, but they’re the options I’ll have to weigh up after this weekend.”
Teague said he wouldn’t be distracted by the employment opportunity on the eve of his side’s appointment against the Roosters, who are lining up to win their third straight premiership.
“It will all take care of itself after this weekend. I’m just focused on this week,” he said.
“North Ballarat is a very good side and we have to try and combat them.”
