After two rounds of the Peter Jackson VFL Season the Northern Blues remain winless following a loss to Williamstown 12.12 (84) to 9.16 (70) at Visy Park in Carlton.

Strengthened by the return of a host of Carlton-listed players including Michael Jamison and Nick Duigan, the Blues were unable to sustain their third quarter dominance as the game slipped from their grasp midway through the final term.

The early signs from the Blues were promising as they took the game right up to Williamstown and matched the Seagulls in general field play throughout the first term. Co-Captain Andre Gianfagna was the only Northern Blues player to register a major in the first term, as he snapped truly to create something out of nothing and keep his side in touch by 10 points at the first change.

Hampered by inaccurate kicking at goal in the first half, the Northern Blues were unable to capitalise when going forward and thus squandered countless opportunities in the second term. Andrew Collins was the stand-out in the second quarter presenting well across half-forward and providing a target. He slotted home the only two goals for the Blues in the second term, whilst Aaron Joseph and Adam Marcon provided the grunt in the midfield department.

In undoubtedly the best quarter of football Northern Blues fans have witnessed so far this season, the likes of Brent Bransgrove, Sam Rowe and Frazer Dale clicked into gear, dominating in all areas of the contest and jumpstarting an amazing run of 6 unanswered goals highlights including a long range effort from Brock McLean and an athletic on the run goal by big man Josh Marchbank. In contrasting fortunes, Williamstown could only manage two minor scores in a third term whitewash by the home side which saw them take a handy 23-point lead into the final break.

With the Blues searching for their first points of the 2012 campaign and victory in sight, the game was turned upside down by the Seagulls, who to their credit refused to give up, claiming the ascendancy through the middle of the ground and delivering the football with precision to their forwards. The straw that broke the camel's back being a crucial 50-50 contest on the Pratt stand wing, resulting in a goalscoring attacking foray into 50 for Wiliamstown. The Seagulls went on to match the Blues' third quarter effort by slamming on 6 consecutive goals of their own to the Legends Stand end of Visy Park.

Remarkably, not a single goal was kicked to the old Heatley Stand end in the second half. Reclaiming the lead at the 15-minute mark of the final term, Williamstown was never headed, in the end running out comfortable 14-point winners to claim their first victory of the season.
