Blue print achieveable: Judd
Carlton captain Chris Judd says two premierships in the next five years is an achievable goal
The Blues released a strategic business plan last week entitled 'The Blue Print' with a main aim of bringing two flags to the club before 2016.
Judd said the plan's formulation took place at board level, but while it wasn't player-driven, he has no problem with the lofty targets set for the team.
"It's an aspirational goal. I think Richmond [are aiming for] 75,000 members and four premierships in 20 years or something, so these things are aspirational," Judd said.
"In my conversations with the board I said that if you were St Kilda and you had said that you were going to win a flag in the last three years and you just missed out, like they have, then you wouldn't deem that time to be a failure. You'd deem that you just missed out on reaching an incredibly challenging goal.
"There's no use in setting goals down low - you need to set them high and if you get them then that's great and if you just miss out then hopefully you've still achieved something as well."
Judd doesn't feel the ambitious plan puts any greater pressure on the players to perform with their own expectations already set at a high level.
Carlton enters the 2011 season looking to improve on its past two campaigns that have ended in gut-wrenching elimination finals losses to the Brisbane Lions and the Sydney Swans.
Judd, 27, enters the season as the reigning Brownlow medallist, but said his focus was on helping achieve the team's goals when asked if he felt he still had room to improve as a player.
"I don't spend a heap of time trying to analyse where my game is going to go," he said.
"I know what I need to do and that's play a role for our footy club. At my age you're more focused on where the growth in the group is going to come from. I know I'm not going achieve my goals as a player if I'm spending all my time thinking about what I can achieve personally.
"The group's healthy and working really hard and hopefully we can make some inroads this year. I think there's no doubt that the group is improving and maturing. Successful teams aren't built overnight, but I'm confident we're headed in the right direction.
"It's an exciting place to be and we're looking forward to making some improvements this year."
