Arizona's Grand Canyon was the stunning setting for a very special Blues training session on Sunday, with a team of 50 embarking on a hike of the remarkable natural wonder.

Initially met by chilly conditions, the players, coaches and staff set off from the top of the South Kaibab Trail which follows a ridge out to Skeleton Point allowing for 360-degree views of the canyon.

Carlton midfield Dave Ellard said he was mesmerised by the beauty of the canyon, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

"It's simply amazing. I've never seen anything like this before. Honestly, we're all blown away by its enormity," Ellard said.

After a 12km hike down to the mighty Colorado River, the group made its way to the 13km-long Bright Angel Trail to trek right back up to the top.

Met by the occasional sightseer, the Carlton group kept a tight formation with strong encouragement coming from both ends of the pack. Players took turns of leading the entourage up the Bright Angel Trail and only one stop was required on the way up - a remarkable feat.

By the end of the day, the travelling party had hiked 30km in just under six hours.

Ellard said the walk, although hugely challenging, had been a wonderful bonding tool.

"I thought the guys did really well today. It was difficult at times, but we stuck fat and encouraged each other. It was amazing how quickly the time seemed to pass by keeping the chatter up," Ellard said.

Carlton's Arizona Training Camp moves into its second week today, with upcoming training sessions set to focus on skills and running.
