"Jezza" named captain of AFL multicultural team
Carlton Legend Alex Jesaulenko was today named skipper of the AFL's Multicultural Team of Champions.
Jesaulenko, who was born in Salzburg, Austria to Ukrainian migrants who later emigrated to Australia and settled in Canberra, played 256 games for Carlton between 1967 and 1979, winning four flags.
Five Carlton players were selected for the initial 50-man squad, including 1995 Premiership defenders Michael Sexton and Stephen Silvagni. Sexton was born in Papua New Guinea while Silvagni's mother, Rita, was born in Italy.

The team is made up of players who were either born overseas or have a parent born overseas. Players were considered from 1896 up to the current day.
Twenty countries are represented in the initial squad. Italians were the largest contingent with 14 players, while 12 countries have just one representative.
The squad will be trimmed to a final team of 22 in late August. The selection panel is AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou, Australia Post managing director and chief executive Ahmed Fahour, Dillon, former West Coast and Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse, Seven Network commentator Dennis Cometti, AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan and AFL historian Col Hutchison.
