CARLTON father-son draftee Dylan Buckley will have surgery on Friday to repair a torn finger tendon that will keep him out for 10 weeks.

Buckley, soon to turn 19, reportedly suffered ligament damage when he caught his finger in another player's jumper at training this week.

He will have an operation to repair the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon in his left ring finger and is expected to resume playing in round five of the AFL season.

Buckley, the son of club great Jim, impressed in his debut NAB Cup outing against Adelaide and Port Adelaide last week, booting a long set shot goal.

He had been named to take on the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Carlton defender Lachie Henderson said the young midfielder had gone straight in for surgery on Friday morning after sustaining the injury on Thursday, and was yet to speak to him.

"I didn't actually see it, I heard about it a bit afterwards but I think it was a tackle … he had the surgery this morning," Henderson said.

"They're saying round four or five to be back so it's a bit of a blow for him but he'll be back, better and stronger for it."

Henderson also said the 2011 draftee and former Northern Knight, who suffered an ankle injury last year that kept him from most of the TAC Cup season, had impressed in his first pre-season at the club.

"He was going really well. He kicked that good goal last week, which I think everyone knows about, but he was going really well," he said.

"As a youngster, he obviously needs to put on a bit of weight but his game style and the way he plays the game is perfect, a bit like his old man, so he was going really well."
