Carlton Official Suspended
The Club has suspended its Property Steward following inappropriate behaviour at the end of the Rd 12 match against North Melbourne.
The Carlton Football Club investigated the matter after receiving notice of the alleged incident from the AFL on Monday.
“As a result of his actions following the game on Friday night we have suspended Wayne from his match day duties for the next four matches. This is a significant penalty for Wayne who has been the Carlton Property Steward for 27 years and has not missed a Carlton game during that period,” said Carlton’s General Manager Football Operations, Steven Icke.
“We are certainly aware of the AFL rules in relation to officials approaching the umpires during or after a match. However it is not just about the official rules of the competition, it is also about respect for umpires and the important role everyone at AFL level plays in setting the right example.
“It is very disappointing for the Carlton Football Club and the AFL and after speaking with Wayne I understand how disappointed he is with his actions and he has made a full apology.” Icke added.
Wayne Gilbert was certainly apologetic for his actions following the game and while he did not say anything to the umpires, he acknowledged his actions were inappropriate and reflected poorly on the Carlton Football Club and the AFL.
“I sincerely apologise to the umpires and the AFL for my actions following the game last Friday night, it was inappropriate and set a poor example. I understand we all have an important role to play in showing umpires and match day officials the respect they deserve and importantly ensuring we set an example that helps to encourage umpires at all levels,” Gilbert said.
“I also apologise to the Carlton Football Club for my actions that were a poor reflection on Carlton and everyone involved at the Club. I know my actions on this occasion were totally opposed to the views of the Carlton Football Club,” Gilbert added.
