Wayde Twomey remained true to his trade as an electrician when he first got wind of his rookie drafting to Carlton.

“I’m a ‘sparky’ by profession, and I was setting up a powerpoint at the time while watching the draft on my iphone,” said Twomey, who was wiring a house in the Perth suburb of Caning Vale.

“These are exciting times and I couldn’t be happier. It (the drafting) has quite literally all come out of the blue, although I did get a call from (Carlton’s assistant national recruiting manager) Shane Rogers last week and had a little bit of an inkling.”

Twomey, who turns 25 on January 2, was taken with the club’s third round selection (51st overall) in the 2010 NAB AFL Rookie Draft. He had relocated to Western Australia three years ago to ply his craft with Swan Districts - the WAFL club with whom he admirably served as a defender/midfielder in its famous one-point Grand Final victory over Claremont this season.

A born and bred Tarneit boy who spent his formative years on the family’s 11-acre farm, Twomey first turned out for Port Melbourne as a junior, before furthering his career with Western Jets.

After a two-year stint with the Jets, Twomey joined neighbouring Werribee, stringing games together at VFL level before crossing the Nullabor to join Swans.

Of the move to Perth, Twomey considered it a lifestyle change. “It was basically a chance to move out of home and grow up a little bit,” Twomey said. “I suppose it was also a little bit of a stepping stone with my footy and it’s come up trumps.”

Twomey expects to fly out of Perth tomorrow to immediately embark on the latest phase of his football life, and renew acquaintance with the Blues’ other Swan Districts imports Dennis Armfield, David Ellard and Jeff Garlett with whom he has previously rubbed shoulders.
