Kernahan, named Captain of Carlton’s celebrated Team of the 20th Century in 2000, joined Parkin and Fitzpatrick, the captain of the 1981/82 premiership teams, in unveiling Jamie Cooper’s recently-completed painting, which features the 23 senior players who collectively participated in those two Grand Final conquests under Parkin’s watch as Senior Coach.
The oil on canvas took Cooper three months to complete and even longer in the pre-planning stage, which in part involved discussions with members of both the 1981 and ’82 premiership teams as they relived past glories.
Today’s launch underpins the Carlton Football Club’s much-anticipated Reunion Dinner at Crown Palladium on Saturday, March 26 - two days after the Blues’ first-round match against Richmond at the MCG - in what doubles as the AFL’s season opener for 2011.
Cooper’s painting will also be auctioned on the night, with a limited edition of 200 prints available for sale from The Carlton Shop.
Incorporated into the 1981/82 Reunion Dinner is the formal Naming of Inductees into the Carlton Football Club’s Hall of Fame, and elevation of an existing Hall of Fame Inductee to Legend status.
The Carlton Football Club Hall of Fame, established in 1987, currently boasts 67 members - from the 19th century Champion of the Colony George Coulthard through to the 1995 premiership half-back Andrew McKay.
Of that esteemed assembly, ten men - Craig Bradley, Bert Deacon, Bruce Doull, Alex Jesaulenko, Wayne Johnston, Stephen Kernahan, John Nicholls, Stephen Silvagni, Harry “Soapy” Vallence and Ken Hands - are official Carlton Legends.
The Hall of Fame Selection Committee comprises Carlton CEO Greg Swann, triple premiership captain John Nicholls, four-time premiership player David McKay, current board member and 1987 premiership player Adrian Gleeson, triple premiership player and 1981 club best and fairest Ken Hunter, Andrew McKay, 1968 premiership player and former President Ian Collins, Carlton journalist/archivist Tony De Bolfo and The Spirit of Carlton’s Bob Lowrie.
