Club membership figures reported in the media today indicate that Carlton is well behind when it comes to true support among the Victorian Clubs. Figures published in today’s Herald Sun have the Blues 6th overall in total membership sales for Victorian Clubs to date for season 2010.

The published figure of 28,290 would position Carlton behind Collingwood, Hawthorn, Essendon, St Kilda and Richmond and only marginally ahead of Geelong in membership so far for 2010.

It is a disappointing position considering in 2009 Carlton was number three in membership numbers for Victorian Clubs with another record year that continued the growth of recent years. The figures from last year indicated Carlton was back as a power club off the field with outstanding support in the community.

“While it is disappointing to read the figures in today’s paper, in reality our membership is currently at 30,563, and while this is better than the published figure we still have a long way to go and are confident our supporters will be part of the Carlton team prior to the first game on March 25th. It is now just over three weeks before the opening game of the season so we are looking forward to a busy few weeks in our membership department,” said Carlton CEO Greg Swann.
