Carlton will blood a new recruit in Sunday’s match against Port Adelaide, with 18-year-old Troy Menzel to make his debut.
Menzel, the younger brother of Geelong’s Daniel, was the Blues first pick in the 2012 National Draft where he was taken at number 11.
The left-footed forward hails from South Australia, where he dominated in the SANFL playing for Central Districts.
Described as a freakish goal-sneak who likes to push into the midfield, Menzel will be hoping to provide some spark on Carlton’s forward line, in the absence of Chris Yarran and Eddie Betts.
Coach of Carlton’s VFL affiliate the Northern Blues, Luke Webster, says Menzel has impressed with more than just his goal kicking capabilities.
“Menzel is a player who is lively on the football field and consistently pulls out something special. As well as having the ability to kick goals, he applies plenty of defensive pressure up forward.”
Carlton Captain Marc Murphy spoke to Menzel during the week, about the teenager’s possible debut.
“I said to him if it comes, don’t get overawed by it. Running out there for the first time, just have a look around, soak it all in, and do what you do best. He’s a smart footballer with plenty of talent.”
Menzel will wear the number 2 guernsey, following in the footsteps of club greats John Nicholls and Greg Williams.
He is set to become the 1147th player for the Carlton Football Club.
