OVERVIEW

It’s been a big year for Ed Curnow, who notched up his 50th AFL game in the Elimination Final win over Richmond.

Curnow, who turned 24 yesterday, kicked off the year by breaking the Princes Park time trial record, which had stood since 1989.

The Blues’ rookie went on to play in 21 games for the season, topping Carlton’s stats sheets for tackles, and establishing himself as a key tagger by playing a shutdown role on some of the biggest names in the competition.

At the season’s end Curnow’s efforts were rewarded on two fronts: he was awarded Best Clubman on John Nicholls Medal night (and finished fourth in the Best & Fairest count), and he has been upgraded to Carlton’s primary list.

HE SAID IT

"I wanted to go quick and I was fortunate enough to have Craig Mottram running with me. He helped me out enormously – he was unreal.

"I was sitting on Craig's heels and he talked to me the whole way. He's a champion Olympic runner and I remember thinking, I can't afford to drop off this bloke.”

– Ed Curnow after breaking the record for the 3.2km Princes Park time trial, January 16.
