Murphy made a Life Member
Captain Marc Murphy is among three great Carlton people who were awarded Life Membership last night.
Carlton’s 149th Annual General Meeting was held at the MCG this evening.
Murphy has played 165 games in the navy blue since being selected by Carlton with the number one draft pick in 2005.
He says it’s humbling to enter elite company in becoming a Life Member of the Club.
“The navy blue guernsey means so much to me, so I feel both very humbled and very honoured to become a Life Member of Carlton," Murphy said.
"We're a Club with a lot of history and a lot of pride – and I want to take this chance to thank the Carlton faithful, particularly our members, for all their support.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed leading the team this year and I'm looking forward to captaining the side again in 2014, in what will be our historic 150th season."
The 26-year-old’s decorated career includes:
- 2006 AFLPA Best First Year Player
- 2006 Carlton’s Best First Year Player
- 2007 Pre-season Premiership Player
- 2008 International Rules Series
- 2011 John Nicholls medal as Carlton’s Best and Fairest
- 2011 All Australian
- 2011 AFLCA Player of the Year
- 2013 Carlton captain
Murphy was welcomed as a Life Member together with Carlton’s GM – Operations Martin Shannon and Carlton member Myer Brott.
Martin Shannon is believed to be the longest serving staff member in Carlton’s history, having served the Club for 26 years. In addition to his operational role, Shannon has been involved in venue management and membership, and played a significant role in managing the development of the Legends Stand and Visy Park’s new training facility.
Myer Brott is Carlton’s longest serving member – the 98-year-old has been a Carlton member for an extraordinary 87 years. After fleeing war-torn Poland in the 1920s, Mr Brott’s family settled in Canning Street at Carlton North, and soon after Mr Brott pledged his allegiance to the dark old navy blues.
In addition to inducting three new Life Members, 15 Carlton members have been awarded Certificates of Appreciation in recognition of being Blues members for more than 80 years.
Meanwhile, Carlton members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of changing the Club’s constitution, to give Country and Interstate members a right to vote on Club matters. The changes will take effect immediately.
The Club also wishes to acknowledge the contributions made by Richard Newton, who has officially retired from the Board of Directors.
Richard has been a director of the Carlton Football Club since 2006 and served as Vice President for the past 3 years.
