Training in the snow followed by two days of hiking isn’t the way most AFL recruits are welcomed into a new club – but that’s how the Carlton journey has begun for new Irish recruit Ciaran ‘Casey’ Byrne.
Byrne was officially signed by Carlton as an International Rookie in November’s National Draft.
Before making the journey to Melbourne, Byrne has joined the Carlton squad at the pre-season training camp in Arizona.
He says the training has been intense, but his new coach and teammates have been supportive.
“Mick has been very good, as it’s really only the third time I’ve met him,” Byrne said.
“He’s a real family man and if you’re struggling he’s a good man to talk to because he really helps you out.”
Byrne says despite the heavy training load he’s found time to get to know his new teammates; particularly those that he has had the pleasure – or displeasure – or sharing a room with.
“I’ve been rooming with Slug, well Davey Ellard that is, and Nickey Graham,” Byrne said. “They’re two weirdos – but it’s been pretty good just to get to know them better as well.”
Byrne will head home to Ireland for Christmas before making the move to Melbourne in January, along with Carlton’s other new Irish recruit, Ciaran Sheehan.
