Mick Malthouse has registered his first win as Carlton coach, defeating West Coast, the club he won two premierships with, by 24 points away from home in front a crowd of 38,674.

Only two Victorian teams managed to win in Perth last season, yet three have already taken the points home from the west through four rounds in 2013.

Carlton's leg speed sliced open West Coast throughout the night on the large expanse of Patersons Stadium, winning 12.17 (89) to 7.23 (65).

Chris Yarran had an electrifying second term to break the game open.

Three times he burst from beyond the 50m arc with long runs forward. He had ten bounces in total and finished each run with a goal to give the Blues a 20-point advantage at the long break.

Yarran finished with a career-high four goals.

The Blues kicked six unanswered goals either side of half-time to extend the lead to 34 points at one stage.

West Coast fought back late in the third term kicking four of the last fivegoals, including a superb finish by Daniel Kerr on the run from hard against the boundary line, to cut the margin to 15 points at the last change.

But Carlton held their nerve with two unanswered goals in the last term to consign West Coast to a 1-3 start to the season.

The Eagles wasted their opportunities in front of goal. They had three moreshots from three more inside 50s in the opening term but only led by three points at quarter time.

They kicked six more behinds in the second term to tally 14 at half-time, which equaled the most minor scores in a first half in the club's history.

Darren Glass suffered a shoulder injury after landing awkwardly on his right shoulder early in the first quarter.

The captain immediately came from the ground to have it strapped. He returned not long after and played out the match but looked impeded throughout the night.
