Skipper is Carlton's elite
It’s football awards time and the team at AFL Media have got in on the action, using Champion Data’s complex rating system to name the seasons best from each club.
Here’s how Carlton players fared:
The Elite At Each Club
Rating points here were allocated per 100 minutes of game time, making it fairer for players who missed big chunks of action through injury or when they were subbed out.
And the Carlton winner is … Marc Murphy.
The skipper ran out for 20 games in season 2014, averaging 24.1 disposals per game. He was second in the team only behind Bryce Gibbs in total tackles (99) and centre clearances (99). Murphy’s best game of the season came in the Round 11 clash with the Lions in Brisbane, when he finished with 38 disposals, eight marks, six tackles and a goal.
That’s Better
For the players who made significant improvements this season compared to 2013, per 100 minutes of game time.
And the Carlton winner is … Chris Yarran.
Yarran enjoyed his most consistent season to date in 2014. He finished fourth in the team for goals kicked (21) and fifth for total disposals. But perhaps his most telling stat was total bounces (67) where he topped the stats sheets for the team and finished the year ranked second overall in the league, narrowly behind Port Adelaide’s Jasper Pittard. It reflects Yarran’s lightning pace and ability to excite by evading opponents as he runs the ball down the ground.
