Mick Malthouse says his Blues haven't given up on this season, but the Carlton coach concedes that the team's performance on Friday night showed a "less than satisfactory attack on the football."
The loss to Collingwood at the MCG leaves the Blues 2-and-5 after seven rounds of season 2014.
While it's a long way from the heights of last year's Elimination Final win over Richmond, Malthouse has urged Blues fans to stick with the club.
"We have got hope," Malthouse said in his weekly message to Carlton members.
"We will continue to promote and play players that give us the characteristics that you expect – people that have a real go; people that stand up."
A lack of consistency and an inability to get the ball forward on Carlton's terms are two areas identified as needing to be addressed.
Despite the result, Malthouse took some small positives from the game, praising the efforts of Sam Rowe and Simon White who he said played with enormous heart and generally restricted their opponents.
Carlton will next face St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Monday night – the Saints coming off a 145–point hiding at the hands of Hawthorn.
It's a result that Malthouse says will mean little come Round 8.
"I'm not getting caught up in the way they played against Hawthorn," Malthouse said. "Hawthorn is a magnificent side."
